1. What is filter media?
Filter media is part of the filtration system to separate unwanted particles from the solution to be filtered. The type of material chosen to use in the filter tank depends on the quality of the input solution and the quality requirements of the output solution.
2. Types of filter media
In general, filter materials are very diverse, each type contain a certain role in the filtration process. We list some common types of filter media as follows to include in the worksheet:
-
- Gravel
- Filter sand
- Anthracite coal
- Activated carbon filter
- Filter media remove Fe/Mn,/As
- ODM media
- Ion exchange
3. Instruction of Filter media calculator
Calculator Utility interface
Calculation of filter material for filter tank (Purpose: calculate filter material, select filter material, calculate filter material height in filter tank, select filter capacity for filter tank, select suitable filter tank)
Average filter flow (for sand filter): 0 m3/h

Description of these parameters
- Enter filter tank diameter (mm):: You enter the diameter of the filter tank, the unit is mm. For example, if your filter tank is 900mm in diameter, you only need to enter the number 900
- FRP filter tank model: The utility will automatically suggest the corresponding filter tank model if the diameter range you enter corresponds to the FRP tank range.
- Average filter flow (for sand filter): The filtration flow corresponds to the diameter you enter. Note that this flow applies to the pressure sand filter tank, the average filtration speed selected is 15m/h. If you use a filter softener, the filtration speed can be increased by 1.2-1.5 times, then the filtration flow will also increase correspondingly.
- Total height of filter media: This height is added after you select the height of each corresponding filter material. The height of the filter material depends on the height of the existing filter column, but usually this height ranges from 600mm to 1500mm. To determine this height, you need to know how tall your filter column is, then subtract 300mm to 600mm of space above from the top tank down to leave space for the material to expand when backwashing from the bottom up.
- Filter Gravel: Height of the supporting gravel layer: The supporting gravel layer needs to be high and cover the bottom filter of the tank by 100-200mm to prevent other materials above that are smaller in size from entering the filter slot. Normally you choose 300-350 in this box
- Filter Sand: Height of filter sand layer: Normally you choose 300-800 in this box, depending on the filter column you choose many types of filter materials or not. If only sand and gravel are filtered, the sand layer can be 800mm or more higher
- Anthracite Carbon: Anthracite layer height: Normally you choose 300-500 in this box, depending on the filter column you choose many types of filter materials or not. If only sand, coal and gravel are filtered, this coal layer can be 500mm or more higher
- Activated Carbon: Activated carbon layer height: Normally you choose 600-1000 in this box, depending on the filter column height you have. Activated carbon filter columns usually only contain gravel and activated carbon to increase filtration efficiency, so the height of activated carbon can be selected to max.
- Birm for remove iron: Height of Birm particle layer to remove iron: Normally you choose 200-400 in this box, depending on the filter column you choose many types of filter materials or not and depends on the filter column height you have..
- ODM for remove iron: Height of iron removal ODM granules: Normally you choose 200-400 in this box, depending on the filter column you choose many types of filter materials or not and depends on the filter column height you have.
- Resin exchange: Ion exchange resin layer height: Normally you choose 800-1500 in this box, depending on the filter column you choose many types of filter materials or not and depends on the filter column height you have. Ion resin filter columns usually contain only gravel and ion resin layer or only contain ion resin layer to increase filtration efficiency, so the resin height can be selected to max.
